MANIPAL’S Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration
Keeping in view the real need for professionally trained personnel by the fast growing hospitality industry, the college was established in October 1986 as a unit of Dr.T M Pai Foundation.
In August 1987, the Foundation joined hands with Welcomgroup,the hotels division of ITC Ltd., a leading corporate sector organization. Welcomgroup is a progressive hotel chain having linkages with Sheraton Inc. USA.
Its training and development activities are recognized by the International Hotel Association, Paris. The Institute is known as the Welcomgroup Graduate school of Hotel Administration.
With effect from the academic year 2007-08, the four-year degree programme in Hotel Management (BHM) offered by the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration has come under Manipal University.
About the Degree Course
Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration, Manipal offers a four years’ Bachelor in Hotel Management (BHM) and a three years bachelors in culinary Arts. These course are recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and enjoys Grade ‘A’, awarded by the National Board of Accreditation.
The College has an excellent placement record. Graduates have found positions in hotel chains (Welcomgroup, Taj, Leela, Holiday Inn, Le Meridien), airlines (KLM, British Airways, Gulf Air, Singapore Airlines), travel agencies (Sita travels, Thomas Cook) and other organisations such as Citibank, Blue Dart Couriers, GE Capital and International Services.
The institution has a well-equipped library with nearly 4500 books and 120 videocassettes on a variety of topics. It has several centrally air-conditioned classrooms with the latest teaching aids like LCD panels, direct projectors, VCR, OHP, etc.
The lab kitchen has more than 50 workstations for honing food production skills. It also has a mock bar and restaurant for food and beverage skills and management.
The Institution also has a computer room with 20 printers, a laser printer, DTP, multimedia, modem and e-mail facilities.
All the students are covered by a Medicare Scheme, which entitles them to the best of medical care and treatment at the adjacent Kasturba Hospital,
Further, as a programmed activity, each student undergoes not less than 30 weeks' on-the-job training during the course at an approved hotel or catering unit as part of the requirements of this institute.
Teaching / Training Hotel
To impart hands-on experience, the Institute has a fully equipped 70-room hotel attached to it. It has evolved over the years to provide appropriate facilities and the infrastructure to make it a model teaching / training hotel.
All students are expected to put in an average of eight hours a week for on-the-job training.
Most students log much more than this. Students are attached to different operating departments and they work alongside the departmental staff under the watchful eyes of faculty members.
This offers an opportunity for the individual to hone his operational skills and to bridge the gap between theory and dealing with real situations.
This training is over and above the requisite practical and industrial training which forms a normal part of the curriculum.
The average annual fee for these courses is approximately Rs.3,25,000/-.
The hostel and mess fees are approx. Rs.1,25,000/-p.a.
